
A significant number of girls volunteer. They may be idealistically motivated, or they may want to get revenge for violence done to their families. Others volunteer to escape abuse or exploitation at home. Some girls simply embrace it to be fed and clothed. In Sierra Leone, one young female member of the rebel army explained: ‘They offered me a choice of shoes and dresses. I never had decent shoes before.’
