Black Robe, the movie

I finally got around to watching the movie Black Robe last night. It had been sitting on the ledge by the DVD player for 3 and a 1/2 weeks! Yikes.

Well, the book was better.

Much of the nuance (as well as much of the journey’s struggle) was lost. The characters didn’t develop, the acting was lacking, and the music reminded me of Hitchcock at times (quite old …).

It’s a good story, either way, but it’s just so much better in Brian Moore’s book. The film (from Moore’s screenplay) felt like a surface treatment of so many of the issues the book delved into. The book is short and a quick read (and did I say better?); why watch the movie? I was glad I had knitting to keep me occupied, although I did miss a few of the subtitles because I was concentrating on a stitch.

What do you think? I'd love to know.
