The Sweetgum Ladies Knit for Love by Beth Pattillo

The Sweetgum Ladies Knit for Love is set in the South, in Tennessee. It stars the members of the knit lit society of the small town of Sweetgum. It’s a book club, but each month’s meeting also has a knitting project associated with it. As the book opens, it’s the start of a new year for the book club, and this year’s theme is love.

The main character is the ex-spinster librarian turned preacher’s wife, but we also get to know the young woman who’s in charge of the dress shop after her mother’s death, a stay-at-home mom, the young woman running the general store, a high-society widow, and a high schooler.

The characters face plenty of challenges in life.

I dislike reading series books out of order, but here I am, at it again. The Sweetgum Ladies Knit for Love is the second in the series, which opened with The Sweetgum Knit Lit Society. However, I didn’t have trouble understanding what was going on or who the characters were.

I like the idea of a book club that incorporates a handicraft as well. And I enjoyed the incorporation of knitting into the book — perhaps because I’m a knitter.

Complaint: Several of the characters have the same doubts and fears along with nearly identical arcs in this book.

Praise: The book’s depth exceeded my expectations, but without sacrificing its feel-good, dare-I-say-chick-lit? atmosphere.

I’d call this a good cozy read. Don’t pick it up if you’re looking for a life-changing book. But if you’re wanting a fun, easy read that’s not so cheesy you hate yourself for wasting precious time on it, this may be a good choice. The book contains some very well-drawn visuals, creating vivid memories.

Beth Pattillo is the author of several books, including Jane Austen Ruined My Life. (This one I want to read!) RITA Award-winning Beth Pattillo combines her love of knitting and books in her engaging Sweetgum series. Pattillo served churches in Missouri and Tennessee before founding Faith Leader, a spiritual leadership development program.

  1. There are times when a sweet, cozy book is just what the doctor ordered! This sounds delightful.

  2. Oh yes, I have to read this one. It sounds like the characters have grown/aged since the first book. That should be fun. Thanks for a good review. And thanks for the pingback.

What do you think? I'd love to know.
