Lent 5: Domestic violence

True Grit: Women Taking On the World, for God's Sake

Domestic violence is the most widespread form of abuse against women in the world today. Between one-quarter and one-half of women have been abused by a partner. Only 44 countries specifically protect women against domestic violence. Battering is the single largest cause of injury to women aged between 15 and 44 in the United States: more than mugging, car accidents and rape combined.

  1. I see a lot of this in Honduras. We toured the police station a couple of years ago and the woman there told us that young girls (I cant even say how young as it turns my stomach), are raped and beaten all the time – there is no help because if they went to the police, the crime rate is so high the police can do nothing but warn the offender – maybe lock them up a few days but once they are released they go back to doing it or worse – they kill the girl who told.
