Lent 9: Girl soldiers

True Grit: Women Taking On the World, for God's Sake

Both boys and girls are generally useful for cooking, fetching water and washing clothes for an army. They can also carry supplies and equipment. but adolescent girls may be handed over to rebel fighters as wives or sex slaves. Increasing numbers of girls go into actual combat. Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge put them at the front to take the worst of the fighting. Or girls are sent into enemy territory to act as human mine detectors or spies.

Wondering what this is all about? Read my post explaining why and how I’m commemorating Lent this year.

  1. Yikes, this is terrible! Makes me wish for a simple ban on driving, I think!

  2. Human mine detectors? I am not surprised – but still, thinking about it gives me chills. These little bits of information you have been giving out Hannah are just heart wrenching. I am thinking I need to get a look at this book True Grit (although it is probably easier to take in the small segments you have been posting).

What do you think? I'd love to know.
