True Grit: Women Taking On the World, for God's Sake

Studies show that one of the main factors influencing mortality rates of children under the age of 5 is the mother’s education level. A 10 percent increase in female literacy reduced child mortality by 10 percent in 13 African countries between 1975 and 1985.

  1. Wow, this is scary, sad, and maybe a little bit hopeful? I wonder if it’s a true reflection of literacy that helps children of mothers, either way, or if the levels of literacy correspond to overall living conditions and quality of life?
