Lent 33: Marriage, child brides

True Grit: Women Taking On the World, for God's Sake

Around many parts of the Muslim world it is not uncommon for girls as young as 9 to be married to men old enough to be their grandfathers. While the practice may be officially illegal, it is accepted because the Prophet Muhammad himself set the precedent. At the age of 52 he took a 6-year-old child as one of his wives; the marriage was sexually consummated when she was 9.

  1. Thank you for your dedication to the suffering women and girls of the world. Indeed, this is a unique and creative way to observe Lent–and, in my opinion, substantial and charitable. God bless you, sister.

  2. Oh this one hit me hard….

What do you think? I'd love to know.
