Lent 40: Marriage, child brides

True Grit: Women Taking On the World, for God's Sake

The legal ban in Bangladesh on the marriage of girls below 18 years of age has rarely been enforced. About 51 percent are married by the age of 18. According to estimates by groups campaigning against the practice, under-age nuptials make up at least 1/10th of the nearly 2 million weddings every year in the nation of more than 130 million people. Many of these brides are just 10 years old.
