WIP Wednesday: Random Stripes

Word Lily knitsI mentioned last week that I’m in the middle of another, even bigger, stripey blanket.

As hinted, here it is!

I’m knitting this in reclaimed cotton yarn, picking the colors as I go. It’s about 90 inches wide and will, when it’s finished, be 100+ inches long. It will work nicely on our queen-size bed. I’m just over 57 inches into it, as of today, one month into the knitting.

Here’s my Ravelry project page. As you can see below, I worked one garter ridge, just to change things up. The reference to Southwest’s colors there was unintentional.

No idea when I’ll finish this; it’s quite weather dependent. If it warms up too much to have a large blanket on my lap, I’ll be forced to put it aside until the weather starts cooling off again in the fall. (It’s supposed to be 81° today, but then cool off again for the weekend.)

In-progress Wramblings

I’m working on a headboard for our bed! It will probably be a couple weeks before it’s finished, but I’m 30+ percent done with the crocheting and I’m excited about it. I think it will be a good place to start for redecorating (or decorating in the first place, actually; we haven’t touched our bedroom since we moved in). I’d been looking for ideas and inspiration for weeks, and I finally found it, so yay! And since the headboard idea came to me, I think I figured out a color palette. It will be bold. No specifics yet, though, just pictures in my head. Edited to add: Yes, I am crocheting a headboard. It will have non-fiber bones and hardware and it will be awesome.

I need to cast on for a plain/simple sock. So, I should go look at my yarn and pick something.

I should also look at my sock yarn for yarn for that shawl I’m going to make. I need to buy beads, but I can’t buy beads until I know what yarn I’m going to use. I wish it was in lace weight, but nope, it’s in fingering. Which will certainly work, but it makes choosing yarn a bit tougher for me.

I also can’t get Leethal’s Adventure Knit-a-long out of my head.

I plied some yarn this week and emptied some bobbins to get ready for Tour de Fleece. I’m getting so excited!

Progress on A’s Christmas stocking has stalled a bit while I’ve been focusing on the headboard, but it’s not abandoned. I’m still liking how it’s looking, so that’s good.

I feel bad that I don’t have photos for this post, but I haven’t taken them, and if I go take them (and upload, and go through them, and edit as needed …) I won’t get anything posted. So I guess I’ll be leaving you in suspense on the actual visuals for now.

Happy Wednesday! What are you working on this week?

Second verse, same as the first, a little bit longer …

Word Lily knitsAKA WIP Wednesday (I first talked about this blanket here not all that long ago, at least in number of posts.)

Like I said yesterday, I should finish knitting the stripes themselves in the next week, hopefully sooner. But even when I get to that point, I’ll still have ends to weave in and a edging to add. I think I’ll decide how deep to make the border as I go. I’m hoping to counteract the curling at least a little. (I know I can’t eliminate it completely, and I’m OK with that.)

I’m still enjoying this blanket, but it’s pretty heavy on my lap (not a problem on snow days, of course) and I’m looking forward to being done with it at this point (I seem to always get to this point with projects). I do think I’ll love the finished product, though.

WIP Wednesday

Word Lily knitsI don’t often get around to posting about projects while they’re still in the works, probably because I usually knit in the basement, where the lighting’s bad for photography (but fine for knitting).

But this week, I hauled the current work in progress upstairs to the good, natural light and snapped a couple pics.

Two-inch stripes, in a two-color stripe sequence which then switches to a different two colors, over and over. In this photo, the blanket-to-be is folded in half, it’s about 5 feet wide. It will, when it’s done, be about 8 feet long, I expect. So at this point, three weeks into the project, I’m about 1/3 done with the knitting. I’m planning to crochet a thin border when the knitting’s done. The colors in the photo aren’t completely accurate, but they’ll work for now.

Oh, I’m working in cotton, reclaimed from old sweaters.

If I keep up my current pace, I’ll be finished in about 2 months, but that’s a big question mark. And then there are all the ends to be woven in … So yeah, definitely a longer-term project for me.
